In July 2009 Apple released the iPhone 3GS. This device has a special bootrom that checks the firmware that iTunes tries to restore to the device. The iPhone 3GS bootrom requires that iTunes modify the images located inside the IPSW file and add a special signature to each one of the images in the IPSW. This signature is obtainable ONLY from Apple.

Apple’s server signs firmware SHSH requests made from iTunes during the ‘Verifying firmware…’ phase of a restore. If you are trying to restore a firmware that Apple is no longer signing, you will receive a 30XX error from iTunes and you will not be able to restore that firmware version to your device. /Period/. The ONLY way you can restore that firmware is to point to Cydia via your hosts file OR run TinyUmbrella and use the SHSH files you have saved /previously/. I cannot emphasize this enough.

***ONCE APPLE HAS STOPPED SIGNING FIRMWARE SHSH REQUESTS FOR A PARTICULAR FIRMWARE VERSION THERE IS NO WAY TO GET YOUR SHSH FOR THAT PARTICULAR VERSION.

2. Use Umbrella to save your SHSH for 3.1.2 BEFORE Feb 04, 2010

YOU cannot restore your device to 3.1.2 no matter what.

It’s quite a hassle having to download and install a new version of three or four browsers every day, so I made a Mac OS X app for each browser (Apple Safari aka WebKit, Google Chrome aka Chromium, Mozilla Firefox aka Minefield, and Opera) that checks if a new version is available, automatically downloads and installs it, and then launches it. If you already have the latest version, it will launch or focus it directly, allowing you to have only those 4 icons in the dock, and always use them to access your browsers.

More About PocketMac PlayNice for Mac & Windows

If you’re like most Mac users, there are certain things you still need in a PC or in Windows. Perhaps you have Parallels installed or you have a separate PC entirely. The problem with having different machines is that your data is current only on one machine but not on the other one. That all changes with PlayNice for Mac & Windows…

This revolutionary new software gives you the power to keep up to 3 computers on the same network in sync with your contacts, calendars and tasks. It syncs…

…between your Mac and PC.
…between your PC and Mac.
…between your PC and your other PC.
…between your Mac and your other Mac.
…between your Mac and your other Mac and your PC.
…between your PC and your two Macs.
…between your Mac and your two PCs.
It can work with all configurations. In fact, it’s a two-way sync, meaning it will perfectly merge your data on up to 3 different machines.

Just install the program on the machines you want to sync and you’re all set. It’s that simple. PlayNice syncs contacts, calendars and tasks between iCal and Address Book on the Mac and Outlook on Windows.

What’s more, it also works seamlessly with Parallels. Want to sync between your Macintosh and your Parallels virtual machine? Simply install the software on both your Mac and within your virtual Windows machine and PlayNice does the rest.

Just 2 percent of all iPhone OS handsets still in use are Apple’s first-generation iPhone, but a new calculation estimates that amounts to nearly 30 percent of the 6.1 million iPhones sold between June 2007 and July 2008.

Mobile advertising firm AdMob released its monthly Mobile Metrics report on Tuesday, which included information on the hardware and software used by owners of Apple’s handsets in the month of March. The data revealed that just 2 percent of all iPhone OS-based handsets that accessed the AdMob network were the first-generation iPhone.

At last. Apple approved Opera’s Mini browser for the iPhone overnight, and in in a few hours it’s already attracted over 150 reviews. They’re not all positive, and not all accurate, but it’s an indication of how much interest there is in a better browser. While Safari was the jewel in the crown of the iPhone user interface, it hasn’t changed in three years. There are now 80 million iPhone and iPod Touches out in the wild, so some choice is long overdue.
