in the wee hours

A free GUI solution to resizing disk partitions: “I installed Leopard on a FireWire drive to test it before upgrading my MacBook Pro’s internal Tiger installation. Satisfied with the results, I tried to use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy Leopard to my MacBook Pro’s internal drive, only to find the external image was slightly too large for the internal.

Not wanting to spend $35 on iPartition, I dug around and found the GParted LiveCD. It provides the GParted GUI front-end to parted (a GNU partitioning program) on a live Linux CD. I burned the image in Disk Utility and booted up on it. Once loaded, it provided a screen to select which kernel version to boot up, even providing a MacBook option. At first it only recognized my internal drive, ignoring my FireWire drives. I unplugged my Leopard FireWire drive, and reconnected it using USB … voilá, the software recognized it.

I’ve tried booting from the resized drive and have verified it successfully resized …

in the wee hours

Use an OS X-Style Global Menu in Ubuntu [Ubuntu]: “

uubuntumac_cropped.jpg
Most ‘Make X Look Like a Mac’ hacks for any system end up merely putting a new skin on the same basic window and menu layouts. Not so with Global Menu, an Ubuntu project that’s seen a lot of community input and has matured along with it. After installing more than a dozen packages and crossing your fingers, your top menu bar should emulate the OS X style, moving your program dialogs up there and keeping the application window relatively clean. At this point, the trick doesn’t work with Firefox and some Java-based apps (hello OpenOffice), but add it to one previously-mentioned modification tutorial and a new Thunderbird theme, and you’re getting much closer to the look and feel of a Mac, if that’s your preference. Hit the link for the detailed installation instructions.

in the wee hours

Get Signatures that Look Handwritten at MyLiveSignature [Handwriting]: “

mylivesig_cropped.jpgAdding a handwritten signature to letters or even email can add a distinguising, memorable mark to your messages—and in cases like mine, that distinct memory is, ‘Boy, his handwriting is awful.’ MyLiveSignature, a free web app that produces stylized signatures for use in emails, blog posts, or other writing, is a fitting solution to that problem. After typing in your name, you get your choice of 10 fonts, and then many more choices for size, color, and tilt. The site then generates HTML and BB code to embed that signature wherever you’d like, and let people know it’s really you writing—even if it’s not quite you. For a similar paper-based signature hack, check out this tip on creating a scan-and-send signature.

in the wee hours

Fix Stuck Pixels on Your Monitor with Killdeadpixel [Repair]: “

killdead.pngFix stuck pixels on your LCD monitor with web site Killdeadpixel. Like previously mentioned JScreenFix, Killdeadpixel unsticks pixels by displaying a quickly changing, high-contrast graphic over the pixel—but Killdeadpixel does it with a neat little draggable graphic, so you can just place the unobtrusive graphic over your stuck pixel and let it do its work. Despite the site’s name (which is a misnomer), a stuck pixel is normally stuck showing red, green, blue, or a combination of those colors, and that is what this site can help with. A dead pixel, on the other hand, will display only black. Luckily dead pixels can be fixed with another method.

-image-Extension to PHP iCalendar for supporting publishing from Apple iCal

: “Description
This allows iCal to publish to your PHP iCalendar site *without* WebDAV support.
This helps with commercial hosts where WebDAV is not available.
[edit] Features
supports publishing and deleting calendars
does not require WebDAV
[edit] Requirements
PHP 4.3.0 or greater is required.
Your host must have Apache configured with the mod_rewrite extension (most do).
You’ll need one of these two things:
1) Either safe_mode = Off needs to be in php.ini (Check with your web host if you’re having problems publishing. This is most likely the culprit.);
2) Or suPHP must be installed on the webserver. This module runs PHP-scripts as the user who owns the script’s directory. Therefore it will run even with safe_mode enabled.
Note: To check your PHP configuration yourself, you can create a file called ‘info.php’ with the following code:
< ?php
phpinfo();
?>
Upload ‘info.php’ to your server and then view it in a web browser. (Generally for security reasons you should then delete this file afterward, or place it in a password protected directory.)….”
